PARENT – TEEN CONFIRMATION INFORMATION MEETING

Please join us for a parent/teen information meeting on Sunday, August 28th at 7pm in the Church. We ask that at least one parent and teen attend the session.

 CONFIRMATION PREPARATION

“A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must profess the faith, be in the state of grace, have the intention of receiving the sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the ecclesial community and in temporal affairs.”(CCC 1319)
Confirmation preparation is a time to grow in a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith and the sacrament of Confirmation. In order to aid parents in passing on the Catholic faith we recommend…
– weekly participation in Sunday mass
– attend 8 Life Nights per year
– attendance on at least 1 retreat
– attending all 12 Confirmation sessions

STEP 1: APPLICATION

Due by September 30, 2022

If your teen will be a freshman in Fall 2022 and will be confirmed as a sophomore in the Spring 2024 please apply below. The cost of materials is $30. Be sure that you receive a confirmation email to verify that the form was completed.

*You will need to upload an electronic copy of the candidates baptismal certificate in order to complete the form. You can upload a file from your computer OR use your phone to fill out the form and take a picture directly in the camera app.

 STEP 2: ESSAYS

DUE SEPTEMBER 30, 2022
In order to better understand each candidate and their parents we ask that both parents and candidates submit a brief essay, around 250 words. This helps us to know a little bit about each candidate before their confirmation interview. You can access the essay form by clicking the links below. Essays are due by September 30, 2022.

CANDIDATE QUESTIONS
1. What role does faith play in your life right now?
2. How do you envision living out your faith in the future? (college, career, vocation etc.)
3. Do you want to get confirmed? Why or why not?

PARENT QUESTIONS
1. What steps have you taken to share the faith with your son/daughter?
2.What role do you envision faith playing in the life of your son/daughter, both now and into the future?
3. Do you want your son/daughter to be confirmed? Why or why not?

STEP 3: CONFIRMATION INTERVIEW

St. Basil is a large parish and Confirmation is a large program. It can be difficult to address the needs and concerns of each candidate in such a large setting. In order to get to know each candidate, all candidates will go through a one on one meeting with the youth minister, which will take place at the beginning of the candidate’s 9th grade year.
You can schedule a time to meet with Erin by clicking the link below.
Interviews run from the end of August – September

STEP 4: ATTEND CONFIRMATION & LIFE TEEN

We ask that in order to prepare for Confirmation, candidates attend AT LEAST 8 Life Nights per year (which amounts to once a month), as well as all Confirmation sessions. There are no make-up sessions for Life Teen or Confirmation.

This year, Confirmation sessions will take place on the first Monday of the month from 7pm – 8:15pm in the St. Basil Parish Center. These sessions will run from October through March. The dates are as follows:

Monday, October 3, 2022

Monday, November 7, 2022

Monday, December 5, 2022

Monday, February 6, 2023

Monday, March 6, 2023

Monday, April 3, 2023

STEP 5: SELECT A CONFIRMATION NAME & SPONSOR

CHOOSING A SPONSOR
A Sponsor for Confirmation should be:
  • A practicing, faith-filled Catholic already fully initiated into the faith. (Has received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation)
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Can not be a parent of the candidate.
  • Able to form a relationship with the Candidate and willing to share his/her own experience of faith.
  • Willing to give the time to participate in the sacramental preparation process and to pray for the Candidate.
All confirmation sponsors must provide a sponsor certificate.
This form will be provided by the sponsor’s home parish and will need to be signed by their parish priest and returned to Judy Paffilas at the Parish Office. This certificate confirms that they are a registered and participating member of the Christian community.
CHOOSING A CONFIRMATION NAME
When choosing your Confirmation name, keep the following in mind:
  • You may be confirmed in your Baptismal name. By keeping your Baptismal name, rather than choosing a new Confirmation name, it reaffirms your Baptismal name and strengthens the connection between the two sacraments.
  • If a new name is chosen, selecting a saint’s name is common practice. One should choose a saint they admire and wish to emulate in the Christian life.
If you would like to choose a new name check out the article below to help you get started.

Sponsors and Confirmation names do not have to be chosen until December 2023. We encourage you and your teen to take time to discern their confirmation name and sponsor.
